Why bus life?

The question I most often get asked is WHY?

When I share this, I often see people tear up…but I prefer you find inspir@tion Inspiration Gif in my words…My why…

Because I lost a husband, a home, 2 children, and the life I knew…all in a very short time. It crushed me. It changed me.

Because I know how short life is and that there are no guarantees that you will get to do the things tomorrow that you wanted to do today. You can make plans for retirement, but you may never get to live them out.

Because I want the daughter I have left to see there are other ways to live that don’t include being a slave to a system that steals your life only to allow you your freedom once you no longer have your health to enjoy it.

Because I want her to know that you don’t have to live like everyone else. You can design your own plan!

And if you don’t allow the currents of life to push you but instead figure out how to go with the flow…you can find joy in every wave!

Why do I subject myself to this chaos?

There are so many events out there, and all founded for different reasons. For me, it’s simply a love of planning the event and seeing the joy that results from that labor of love.

I love the spreadsheets, form designing, and helping people get registered. I like planning the activities and seeing others jump in and help make ideas come to life.

I love knowing that at the end of all that hard work is a tangible thing that so many of us need…a safe space and time to connect! It’s a time we can all come together, sit still for a bit, and build relationships in what can sometimes be a lonely life.

Even in a bus full of family we can feel alone but then we pull up at an event and we see friends, we have conversations with someone outside of our spouse, kids, or hell even the dog, that’s who I probably talk to the most and don’t lie and tell me I’m the only one! We sit around dinner tables and campfires, and we share ourselves with others. We build relationships and community.

We become family.

All the work is worth it when I get to see my daughter so full of life as she spends quality time with her friends. The people who live life like her and understand her in a way that many can not. And I get that same feeling seeing that happen for you and your children!

And now for the rest of the story

RV life was always a dream of mine, the retirement plan as cliche as it is. But life…well, it ebbs and flows like the currents of the ocean over which we have no control.

In 2017, my marriage exploded, and my life caught the flow of a very different current. A path I could have never expected.

Then, in 2018, after a year-long trial process with my husband that ended with a 9-year prison sentence, my daughter, the younger in a set of identical twins, died suddenly at just 15 years old, and again I was shoved into another current.

In February of 2021, two BIG things happened. First on Mardi Gras day I bought my bus, not my first bus (that’s a whole other story! Seriously, ask me how many buses I bought before settling on bus 603) but the bus that would eventually become my home, then a few days later I attended my first Skoolie Swarm and experienced a taste of the life I knew I wanted!

By June demo began on the Hot Mess Express Bus! However, another blow came later in 2021 when I lost a second daughter, the eldest twin, and the current I was on quickened.

With the help of my bestie, Kelsey, who was living with me at the time, I began selling nearly everything I owned in a series of like 10000 garage sales; I even sold my house at one of them!

In April of 2022, I packed a U-Haul with everything I had left, and my kid and I moved to my cousin’s house in GA to begin converting our bus into a home on wheels. There was a lot of work, so much work, and I was lucky to have some help from family here and there along the way. There was a metric ton of sweat and nearly as much blood. I learned how to do all the things, and I did them. It was not easy, but I would do it again without question!

In October of 2023, we hit the road full-time. We have been livin’ our best life and learning along the way and haven’t looked back!

Since then, I have met the love of my life, replaced the engine in my bus, seen some amazing places, had 2 miscarriages, suffered a couple of heartbreaks, hiked some incredible trails, discovered I love mountain biking, and met the most amazing people who have walked through it all with me.
